The affordable care act is not socialized medicine as most conservatives try to say. This act which will do a lot of good (though doesn't go far enough) will mandate that people buy health insurance from PRIVATE health insurance companies and not the government. It will require you or your employer to purchase health insurance from United Healthcare, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, etc. and NOT from the government. The government will not run or have any descision making in the care, treatment, or payment of the insurance claims or premiums. The only time the government gets involved in the entire process is if you or your employer doesn't buy the insurance or if you are unable to afford it then the government will provide help with the premiums. Beyond that, they DO NOT get involved. There are over 45 million people without insurance so if they get sick they go to the ER and then tax payers pick up the tab. Why force someone to go to the ER and generate a bill in excess of $1000 or more when if they have insurance, they can go to a general doctor and pay less than $100. Not only is it cheaper for EVERYONE but it will SAVE lives because then people won't have to wait until they are extremely sick to go to the ER, they can take care of it earlier where it is cheaper. Additionally, with the added millions of new customers to the insurance companies, the premiums will be reduced to all people in the country. That's why the bigger the company you work for, the cheaper the premiums are because there are more people getting insurance so the company can provide it cheaper as the risk is spread out. If they have millions of more new customers, the risk is significantly spread out. Socialized medicine which I would love would mean that the entire health insurance industry would not exist anymore and it would be medicare for all where the government takes care of the premiums and payments to doctors. This act signed into law by Obama does not do that nor does it come close to doing that. It not only does the above things mentioned, but it now prevents them denying insurance to children and soon to sick people or people that become sick after getting the insurance, but it also allows children who are still in school and are unable to work to afford insurance to stay on their parents insurance for a longer period of time so that they will continue to have the insurance and be able to focus and finish school. I just don't understand people who would not be in favor of everyone having health insurance when it doesn't add to their costs and even if it did so what, millions of people would be able to live happier healthier lives that otherwise would have been unable to because of lack of resources and many other issues they deal with that prevent them from getting it.
